What are the goals for the Walk for Music?
#1 Raise lots of money for local music programs
#2 Bring together music-makers of all ages, skills, and backgrounds, from all of Boston’s neighborhoods and surrounding communities
#3 Celebrate music-making
#4 Advocate for increased arts funding (public & private)
Who can participate in the Walk for Music?
Any music-related program (i.e. music, dance or theater) in a school, church or community organization may participate in the Walk for Music, AND YOUR PROGRAM KEEPS 100% OF THE MONEY YOU RAISE!!!
How does the Walk for Music work?
1. Music programs must register as a Walk for Music “team” to raise money.
Note: Music programs should be capable of receiving tax-free donations.
2. Recruit students, members, parents, or friends to walk for your team. Each walker must register online.
3. Walkers declare which team they will walk for. Each walker recruits pledges, collects money, and gives it to the team leader. There are no minimum pledges or goals. Each team deposits and keeps 100% of pledges raised. Final reports are due to Walk for Music by May 15, 2007.
Together, we raise money, hear great music, and join fellow music-makers. Everyone wins, and we all have fun!!!
Why does music need a pledge walk?
We are in danger of losing many of the music programs in Boston's neighborhoods and surrounding communities if we do not find supplemental funding sources.
- - - Budgets are squeezed in schools and community organizations throughout Massachusetts.
- - - Tickets & fees do not cover the costs of music programs
- - - Institutional support for the arts has drastically reduced in recent years
- - - Small, grass roots music organizations do not have the capacity to do significant fundraising
Community organizations and schools have been forced to make difficult choices – consequently, many music programs have been already been cut. The Walk for Music will create a new funding source that helps today's music programs survive!!!
